Superior Hiking Trail Association is Looking for New Executive Director

The Superior Hiking Trail Association (SHTA), headquartered in Two Harbors, Minnesota, is seeking a dynamic leader to serve in the role of Executive Director.

The SHTA is dedicated to constructing, maintaining, and promoting a world-class 310-mile natural surface trail paralleling Lake Superior from Wisconsin to Ontario. The 5,000 plus member organization has a small knowledgeable staff, a passionate group of volunteers, and a committed, active board of directors dedicated to the success of a new strategic plan.

The trail is experiencing tremendous growth in use, awareness and financial support as it is discovered, experienced and enjoyed by day hikers, trail runners, backpackers and other outdoor enthusiasts from Minnesota and beyond. The enthusiasm for the trail resulted in winning funding from REI’s “Every Trail Connects” competition in 2015 to complete the southern end of the trail as well as loops in Duluth. The SHTA competed against better-known trails in coastal states but thanks to members and trail users the SHTA was the first to max out REI’s online voting competition.

The trail’s footpath also goes through two communities that received national recognition from outdoor and travel publications. Grand Marias, on the north end, was named Outside magazine’s 2016 “The Best Places to Live in the U.S.” Duluth on the south end, received the same recognition in 2014 in addition to winning Outside’s annual “best outdoors town” competition the same year. The new Executive Director will have an opportunity to lead one of the region’s most scenic and popular outdoor offerings as well discover untapped potential for additional support.

General responsibilities for the new Executive Director include leading the organization in maintaining and improving the trail as well as managing the organization’s marketing communications, fundraising and financial management.

Salary range is $52,000-$58,000. A complete benefit package, including health and life insurance, retirement savings plan and generous paid time off.
