A Seventh Edition "Guide to the Superior Hiking Trail"
The Guide to the Superior Hiking Trail details over 296 miles of footpath on the North Shore of Lake Superior from Jay Cooke State Park near Duluth, MN. to the Canadian border. Mile-by-mile descriptions lead the casual hiker or ardent backpacker through hardwood forests of birch and maple, and into boreal forests of spruce, pine and fir with amazing cascading rivers and serene lakes and ponds. This landscape, once carved by ancient glaciers, is dominated by Lake Superior, the largest freshwater lake in the world. The Superior Hiking Trail is largely on the ridgeline overlooking Lake Superior, which provides great views and some of the most impressive scenery in the Midwest.
The Guide can be used for both day hikes and backpacking. Day hikes from trailhead to trailhead are 5-11 miles in length. The Guide contains complete and up to date maps, info on campsites, trailhead parking lots and a mile-by-mile description of each section.
The Superior Hiking Trail starts at Jay Cooke State Park and continues through Duluth for 42 miles. There are no SHT backcountry campsites in this section. The trail then continues to Otter Lake Road near the Canadian border for a main trail distance of 296 miles. There are 93 backcountry campsites in this section. There are no fees, permits, or reservations required to camp on the trail. The Guide is layed out section-by-section with each section providing trailhead parking directions, campsite and water source info, and a mile-by-mile description of the trail and scenic features.
