Volunteer Trail Projects

After a winter of snow, ice, and high winds we are planning three trail-clearing work weekends to help get the trail back into hikeable shape.

We need chainsawyers and lots of assistants to clear the trail, lopping brush and moving small trees off the trail and larger trees that have been cut up into chunks. For each weekend we could also use a volunteer who is willing to help with meal preparation!

The first work weekend is May 6th and 7th.

You can sign up to work Saturday 9-4, Sunday 9-3, or both days. We will be based out of Schroeder and working on projects in that area.  We will be hosting volunteers free of charge at the Schroeder Town Hall. We will provide Friday May 5th and Saturday May 6th indoor lodging (bring your own sleeping mat, cot, sleeping bag, blankets, pillows, etc.). There is also camping available in the nearby baseball field if you prefer to bring your camping gear and sleep outside. SHTA will provide Saturday and Sunday breakfast, plus Saturday supper. You need to bring your lunches.

The second work weekend is May 13th and 14th.

You can sign up to work Saturday 9-4, Sunday 9-3, or both days. We will be based out of Finland and working on projects in that area.  We will be hosting volunteers free of charge at the Clair Nelson Community Center (Finland Rec Center). We will provide Friday May 12th and Saturday May 13th lodging (bring your own sleeping mat, cot, sleeping bag, blankets, pillows, etc.).  There is also camping available in the nearby field if you prefer to bring your camping gear and sleep outside. SHTA will provide Saturday and Sunday breakfast, plus Saturday supper. You need to bring your lunches.

The third work weekend is May 27th, 28th, and 29th (Memorial Day Weekend & Holiday).

You can sign up to work Saturday 9-4, Sunday 9-4, Monday 9-3, or all days. We will be based out of Grand Marais and working on projects in that area.

We will be hosting volunteers free of charge at the Grand Marais Recreation Area (Campground). We will provide camping on Friday May 26th, Saturday May 27th, and Sunday May 28th. We will have indoor space for meals and gathering if the weather is bad. SHTA will provide Saturday and Sunday supper along with Saturday, Sunday, and Monday breakfast. You need to bring your lunches.

For all work weekends, the trail could be wet and muddy or still have snow in places, so be sure to have good waterproof boots. Bring work gloves if you have them, or they will be provided. Tools and safety glasses will be provided, along with training. Only certified chainsawyers can saw on the trail.

Please e-mail Jo to sign up. She’ll need to know:

  • Which days you want to volunteer
  • Which nights you want to stay
  • Which meals you would like (and if you are a vegetarian)
  • Whether you are signing up as a chainsawyer or as an assistant.

Let Jo know if you have any questions. We’re looking forward to a great month of trail clearing!
Thank you!

Looking ahead: We will be working on the North of Gooseberry Re-route June 3 & 4th, with registration starting next month.
